WillCO2st

We are developing methods and tools to empower postgraduate students to estimate Carbon Dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions associated with their research.

Starting out by measuring a year’s CO2e for one year of PhD research, we developed WillCO2st – an android app – that enables users to use publicly-available electricity grid and travel data to accurately and reliably estimate real-time carbon footprint of their research and every day activities. We are now preparing this work for publication in open access journals.

Our overarching aim is to enable and encourage students to a create Carbon Appendix at the climax of their research theses, publish their experiment and procurement estimates, and then contribute to a Carbon Codex of research related carbon footprint data.
